IT WAS a rescue of a different kind for emergency services in Millers Forest on Friday. Horse Dippy had become stuck and submerged in water on a rural property and crews were called in to help extricate her.
SES and NSW Fire and Rescue crews were tasked to the scene by NSW Police.
"Our unit responded with three rescue vehicles and our large animal rescue trailer," a statement from Port Stephens SES said.
"The trailer carries specialist equipment including large glides, lifting harnesses, specialist slings, cordage and animal safety equipment."
The crews used chainsaws to remove shrubs and trees to clear access to the site for equipment and vehicles.
Two SES volunteers, both experienced horse handlers, worked with the Dippy in what became a three-hour mission to get her on to dry land. A veterinarian from Morpeth was also on standby. A harness system got Dippy to the bank, where the team used a large board to slide her up on to safer ground.
"We are very glad to report that the lovely horse Dippy was safely rescued, and even shared a cuddle with the crews."
