Three gun plots unravel in eight hours as thugs removed from streets

Last week one of the most dramatic days in recent memory unfolded at Liverpool Crown Court as three gun plots unravelled in just eight hours.

Friday saw two brothers jailed for murder, three men locked up over a drive-thru shooting and three others convicted over a separate gun attack.

Each of the crimes, which spanned Liverpool, Wirral and Warrington, were busted after breakthroughs during lockdown.

The day started with the sentence hearing of the Foy brothers, Michael and James, for the murder of Michael Rainsford.

The pair rode an electric bike to the 20-year-old's Litherland home on the night of April 7, 2020, and shot him twice.

Prosecutors pitched the attack as a revenge plot as it came less than an hour after bricks were thrown at the Foys' home on Rossini Street in Seaforth.

Tragically, Mr Rainsford played no role in that attack.

The brothers denied any role in the shooting and forced Mr Rainsford's family through the ordeal of a trial.

But, already convicted, 19-year-old James admitted his guilt just minutes before he was jailed for life.

Through his barrister, Christopher Henley, QC, he said he wanted the world to know the truth - that he pulled the trigger and not his brother.

James, also convicted of gun possession in relation to a separate incident, was handed life with a minimum of 28 years.

Michael, 22, was jailed for life with a minimum of 30 years.

Following that hearing, a different court hosted another gun thug in the afternoon.

That was the case of David Pugh, whose actions had caused shock when he struck at the Bromborough McDonald's drive-thru last June.

The 32-year-old, of Woolfall Crescent in Huyton, stalked a vehicle before firing twice at his victim, who was in a car that was being handed food at the time.

Footage captured at the scene showed the audacity of the daylight attack - and was crucial in bringing Pugh and his accomplices to justice.

He admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a firearm and on Friday was jailed for 12 years and nine months, with an extended three years on licence.

This means he must serve at least eight years and three months behind bars before he can even apply for parole.

Two of his accomplices were also locked up on Friday afternoon.

As that case was coming to a conclusion the jury in a gangland trial were delivering guilty verdicts.

That was also over a gangland hit - a shooting that had taken place on Poplars Avenue in Warrington.

Fast food played a role in that attack too as gunman Aaron Bretherton pretended to be a pizza delivery man.

The bungling hitman shot four times at what turned out to be an innocent victim - a man he left with life-changing injuries.

The 24-year-old then fled to a getaway vehicle.

Bretherton, of Netherfield Road South in Everton, was convicted of conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm.

He had already admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a firearm.

Anthony Morris, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm (Cheshire Police)

Anthony Morris, 23 and of no fixed abode, and Lewis Fitzpatrick, 25 and of Eldersfield Road, Norris Green, were found guilty of conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The verdicts ended a dramatic day in Liverpool Crown Court that concluded with some of the region's most dangerous men being removed from action.
