Three further coronavirus deaths in North East hospitals

There have been three new coronavirus deaths recorded in the North East.

The figure is the lowest number of new deaths recorded in weeks since the crisis began.

On Saturday, there had been nine deaths in the region and seven on Friday.

The Department of Health death toll has now surpassed 40,000 but does not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which is thought to have passed 50,000.

NHS England announced on Sunday a further 72 people had died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus, bringing the total number in England to 27,430.

Those who died included six aged between 40 and 59, 18 were between 60 and 79 and the remaining 48 were aged 80 or above.

NHS England releases updated figures each day showing the dates of every coronavirus-related death in hospitals in England, often including previously uncounted deaths that took place several days or even weeks ago.

This is because of the time it takes for deaths to be confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19, for post-mortem examinations to be processed and for data from the tests to be validated.

Here is the regional breakdown by NHS trust:

County Durham and Darlington - 1

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 0

Gateshead - 0

Northumbria - 0

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 0

Newcastle - 0

North Tees and Hartlepool - 2

South Tees - 0

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys - 0
