Three from Bihar arrested in connection with Aadhaar-Enabled Payment System fraud cases in Mangaluru

MANGALURU: Mangaluru police arrested three persons from Bihar for their alleged involvement in several Aadhaar-enabled payment system (AEPS) fraud cases.

The arrested are Deepak Kumar Hembram, 33, from Supaul district; Vivek Kumar Bishwas,24, and Madan Kumar,23, from Araria district in Bihar.

City police commissioner Anupal Agrawal, on Sunday, said that the arrested were involved in illegally collecting data from Kaveri 2.0 software used in the registration of properties. They had collected the Aadhaar numbers, biometric data using scanner and transferred the amount from the bank accounts of those who had registered their lands. Several people who had registered their properties at the sub-registrar office in Mangaluru in the last six months had lost their money from various banks using AEPS. About 10 cases were registered at the Mangaluru CEN police station.

Accordingly, on the direction of Agrawal, DCPs Sidharth Goyal, Dinesh Kumar BP and ACP Parameshwar Hegde, a special team was constituted and they picked up the trio from Purnia district in Bihar on October 22.

Police were successful in freezing 10 bank accounts of the arrested, with a total balance of Rs 3.6 lakh. Their mobile phones have been seized and technical experts are verifying data. So far, police have collected more than 1,000 registration letters in pdf format from Karnataka, and more than 300 registration details in pdf format from Andhra Pradesh and other states, from the arrested. For further investigation, police will take the accused to Bihar for spot verification and collection of other documents.
