Three free agent offensive tackles for the Dolphins to target

The Miami Dolphins have had a fruitful first few days of the 2020 calendar year. With an early flurry of spending, the Dolphins quickly established themselves as one of the more active teams in free agency — yet all of that spending has done little to bring new talent to the offensive tackle position. Miami’s pass protection in 2019 was shaky at best and there’s little question that the Dolphins need upgrades across the board. But the team’s lack of movement on some of the key tackle free agents seems to indicate that this team really does want to buy into Jesse Davis as a possible starter; which would leave just one tackle spot open for claiming in the lineup.

If the Dolphins plan to tab a draft selection for such distinction, they’ll have plenty of chances to do so in a deep tackle class. But if Miami hopes to add more bodies to the competition, they have a few logical free agent candidates still on the market to tap into.

Germain Ifedi

Ifedi brings the most power to the table — if the Dolphins are dead set on upgrading their ability to reset the line of scrimmage, he might be a viable option. The question, of course, is whether or not Ifedi expects to be paid a long-term deal with sizable guarantees. If that is the case, the Dolphins aren’t likely to bite. But if he’s willing to come on a “prove it” deal, he seems to fit the traits Miami wants from a physical perspective.

Marshall Newhouse

A former New England Patriot, Newhouse was sure to make the list. Newhouse started more than half of the season for New England in 2019 at at 330 pounds, he’s yet another big mauler who can bring power.

Mike Remmers

Remmers doesn’t have the same raw power to his game but he’s an experienced starting tackle who has logged big time snaps in every season since 2015 — if Miami wants a veteran who has been around the block, Remmers is one of the most attractive options left on the market. He’s likely to come cheap and would be a viable swing tackle, given his experience on both sides of the line.
