Three engaged for cleaning septic tank killed near Sriperumbudur

Three persons engaged in cleaning a septic tank by a private catering company died of asphyxiation near Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram district on Sunday.

According to a police official, the catering company at Katrambakkam in the Somangalam police station limits had engaged M. Murugan, 41, and D. Bhagyaraj, 40, of Katrambakkam, and S. Arumugam, 45, of Amarambedu, for the cleaning work.

The three bodies were sent to Sriperumbudur Government Hospital for autopsy.

Senior police officials of Kancheepuram district visited the site, and are investigating the cause of accident.

A case has been filed against the catering company, and two persons have been arrested for engaging the workers without providing them with safety gear.

CM announces solatium

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami condoled the death of the three persons and announced a solatium of ₹10 lakh to the families of each of the deceased.

He ordered the district administration to open an inquiry into the incident and initiate strong action.
