KHON KAEN: A helicopter crashed into a paddy field in Chonnabot district on Wednesday morning, killing four people.

The helicopter, AS355NP, came down around 9.30am in tambon Wang Saeng and was engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived at the scene, Pol Col Keeratikorn Amornpatpakhin, chief of Chonnabot police station, said.

Firemen extinguished the blaze, but by then the helicopter was a fire-gutted wreck.

Khon Kaen airport director Atthaya Lapmark said the four people in the helicopter were killed. The cause of the crash was already being investigated.

The ill-fated helicopter had taken off from a flight training field in Saraburi and was heading to Khon Kaen when air traffic control lost contact with it over Chonnabot district, the airport director said.

Dark clouds covered the sky over the area and it was raining. Airport authorities suspected poor visibility contributed to the crash.
