Three dead, four escape, after fire rips through home on Manitoba First Nation

CROSS LAKE, Man. — Three people were found dead in a house that caught fire early Saturday on a First Nation in northern Manitoba.

RCMP say in a news release that when their members arrived at the home on the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, it was fully engulfed in flames and officers could not get inside because of the fire's intensity.

They say First Nation safety officers, who were first on scene, had already attempted to enter the home through a window but they, too, were pushed back by the heat.

Members of the Cross Lake Fire Department also responded and extinguished the fire.

Police say that four of the residents -- a 36-year old man, a 36-year-old woman, a 20-year-old woman and a four-year-old girl were able to escape through a window.

An autopsy has been scheduled to confirm their identities of the three who were found dead once firefighters were able to get inside.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
