Three people are dead after a tree fell on their car at Kallista, south-east of Melbourne.

Victoria Police said five people were in the car about 2:30pm on Sunday when the tree came down, pushing the vehicle down an embankment off Sherbrooke Road.

"We normally see speed or distraction or those sorts of things [or] alcohol [and] drugs being involved in collisions, but on this particular occasion it's none of those things," Acting Commissioner Libby Murphy said.

"It's people who are just going for a drive on a Sunday afternoon on a long weekend, obviously enjoying the surroundings and a terrible thing's happened to them."

Two men and a woman aged in her 30s died at the scene.

A child was airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital and another woman, aged in her 30s, was taken to hospital by road, both with non-life-threatening injuries.
