Three-day warning of snow, ice and plunging temperatures for Greater Manchester as Met Office issues yellow alert

Parts of Greater Manchester are facing the prospect of snow and ice for the next three days.

A Met Office yellow weather warning has been issued starting at midnight tonight and lasting until Wednesday.

It will mainly affect the north and eastern parts of the region including Tameside, Oldham and Rochdale.

There were flurries of snow this morning in Tameside with temperatures dipping to minus 1 by early evening.

Icy winds will make it feel more like minus 6, according to the Met Office forecast.

In Oldham, temperatures are expected to plunge to minus 4 on Tuesday and minus 5 on Wednesday.

Freezing winds of more than 20mph will make it feel more like minus 9.

Some places will be harder hit than others by the wintry blast, however.

The yellow weather warning says: "Frequent snow showers may lead to travel disruption in places. Some places are likely to miss the showers altogether."

Forecaster says people should expect some roads and railways lto be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

There is also a 'small chance of longer travel delays in places with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.'

People should take care to avoid injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, while drivers and cyclists should take care for icy patches on untreated roads.

There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off, forecasters say, and a 'small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected'.

There is less chance of heavy snow in Manchester, Stockport, Wigan, Salford, Bury, Bolton and Trafford.

But the forecast is still for sleet and light snow in places over the next 48 hours, with freezing temperatures.
