Three-day-old baby dies after mother tests positive for coronavirus

A three-day-old boy has died after his mother tested positive for coronavirus, an inquest has heard.

Coolio Morgan was born with a low heart rate in Bridgend, Wales on 2 May, the BBC reported.

He died three days later at Singleton Hospital in Swansea, Pontypridd Coroner’s Court was told.

Severe hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, which occurs when the brain is starved of blood and oxygen, was listed as the primary cause of death.

Covid-19 was listed as a secondary cause.

Senior coroner’s officer Lauren Howitt told the hearing Coolio’s mother was “found to be Covid-19 positive soon after delivery,” according to the BBC.

Coroner Graeme Hughes said: ”I pass on my condolences to the family in these most sad and depressing circumstances.”

Mr Hughes has asked his officers to investigate the circumstances of Coolio’s death.

A final inquest hearing has been set for 28 April next year.
