Three-day-old baby died at Cardiff home after being found unresponsive by mum

A three-day-old baby died suddenly after her mother woke to find her unresponsive, an inquest has heard.

An inquest at Pontypridd Coroners' Court on Tuesday, July 27 heard Luna Atkins was born at 37 weeks by emergency cesarean section on May 9, 2020.

Mum Philippa Atkins and daughter Luna were discharged from the University Hospital of Wales two days later on May 11 at around 5pm.

The inquest heard later that evening Luna's parents Philippa and James Atkins had fallen asleep with her in bed between them after Luna had been fed.

Philippa later woke up during the early hours of the morning, on May 12, to find Luna lying on her back unresponsive at their home on Partridge Road, Cardiff.

CPR attempts were made but, despite further help from paramedics, Luna was later declared deceased.

Area Coroner for the South Wales Central Area, Mr David Regan, told the hearing "there were no police concerns about the death of Luna". Police arrived at the property following the tragic incident, which has been described as a medical event.

Reading a statement provided by the police, Mr Regan said the property was described as being "well-kept", and there was "plenty of fresh food in the fridge". Luna's room was also described as being "clean and tidy".

The inquest was also told pathologist Dr Andrew Bamber carried out a "thorough" examination of Luna following the tragedy, but he could not confirm what precisely led to her death. He provided the medical cause of death as unascertained.

His report also noted that when it comes to considering the topic of co-sleeping, greater risks are usually found when parents or guardians have been drinking alcohol or smoking. Dr Bamber confirmed there was no evidence to show that either parent had consumed alcohol prior to the incident.

Mr Regan accepted these findings when reaching his conclusion.

He told the inquest: "I have a thorough postmortem examination by Dr Bamber.

"Her (Luna's) parents made the choice she could co-sleep with them - that is a choice clearly available to parents. It's a choice they felt was in Luna's best interests.

"Luna's parents did not smoke, and there is no suggestion of any alcohol at all in the blood samples they provided.

"Luna appeared healthy and bright and was discharged home on May 11, 2020. She went to sleep in her parents bedroom, sleeping between them, that night.

"It seems to me there is absolutely no evidence at all that co-sleeping was contributive of Luna's death.

"The cause of death provided by the pathologist is unascertained. Luna Atkins died of unascertained natural causes, and that's the conclusion."
