Three cut from Ireland World Cup squad as camp issue Joey Carbery injury update

John Cooney, Finlay Bealham and Mike Haley are the latest players to be cut from Ireland's World Cup training squad, and it has been confirmed that Joey Carbery will be out for four to six weeks with an ankle injury he sustained against Italy in Saturday's opening warm-up game.

Carbery is left facing a race to be fit for the World Cup opener against Scotland on September 22.

A squad of 40, including Carbery, travelled to Quinta Do Lago in Portugal this morning to begin an eight-day training camp.

Devin Toner, who rolled his ankle in Saturday's 29-10 victory, and Rob Herring who suffered a back spasm, have both fully recovered.

Ulster scrum-half Cooney also covers the out-half position but Ireland boss Joe Schmidt has clearly decided that Carbery will be OK for the finals in Japan.

Connacht's Bealham faced serious competition in the front row for selection, while Munster full-back Haley, who made his Test debut last weekend, was always a very long shot to make the final squad of 31.

The trio have returned to their provinces but, like Ultan Dillane and Rory Scannell who were cut before them, they will remain on stand-by for injuries.

Ireland's next Test match is against England at Twickenham on Saturday, August 24.
