Three counties could face extra restrictions as Covid lockdown decision made

Donegal, Louth and Limerick continue to battle with soaring Covid-19 rates despite the near six-week lockdown.

Both Donegal and Louth still have incidence rates per 100,000 people of over 200 while Limerick's now stands at 188.

Many counties were originally moved to Level Three after getting near the 200 mark and health experts as well as the Government are likely to be keeping a close eye on the three outliers.

In the most recent figures, Donegal recorded just 16 cases and their incidence continues to fall - however it is still the highest in the country at 222.4.

Louth comes next with a rate of 208.7 after a further 20 cases were recorded in the latest Department of Health data on Wednesday.

And Limerick, which had seen much improvement, shot up with a further 25 cases on Wednesday with their rate now 188.8.

Waterford, Roscommon, Dublin, Meath, Westmeath, Offaly, Longford, Monaghan and Kilkenny all have rates of over 100 in the last two weeks but remain under 150.

Wexford remains the star performer with zero cases on Wednesday and a rate of 34.7 - the lowest in the country.

NPHET met on Wednesday where the soaring rates in Donegal, Louth and Limerick was expected to be one of the key talking points.

The Cabinet sub-committee will meet today on NPHET's findings before a full Cabinet meeting on Friday when the public will find out about the key decisions.
