Three cities in Scotland named as the most expensive places to buy a house in the UK

The top 20 most expensive cities to buy a house in the UK have been revealed and three places in Scotland have made the list.

The property experts at Zoopla have created a price index that measures the average cost of purchasing a home and the amount it grows month-on-month.

London came at the top with a staggering average house price of £524,400. The majority of the list are places in England, but Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen were all found to be expensive for buyers.

The Mirror reports that the average house price in Edinburgh is £263,600, placing it sixth on the list of the most expensive cities.

On the slightly more cost-friendly other end of the scale, Aberdeen placed 19th with the typical property costing £142,100.

And at the bottom of the list came Glasgow in 20th place, where it costs £140,200 on average to buy a house in Scotland's largest city - making it the most affordable place on the ranking.

In England, Newcastle was found to cost the least out of all the most expensive cities. Here, you'll pay an average of £147,200 if you want to buy a home.

But other places such as Cambridge and Oxford are catching up to London in terms of costly house prices, where they're £465,700 and £450,000 respectively.

Zoopla's executive director Richard Donnell said: "The dynamics that have shaped the housing market over the last five years are shifting.

"We expect affordable urban centres to fare better than average in 2023 but the inner London market may require another year before it is ready to rebound."

But house prices could fall by 10 percent next year, according to Savills. The estate agents say that mainstream London and the southeast of England are likely to experience the largest house price drops in the short term and the weakest performance over the coming five years.

Because of the cost of living crisis, not as many people are buying properties as they normally would - and this reduced demand is said to mean lower prices.
