Three children and two adults trapped in air as theme park ride 'malfunctions'

Five people were trapped on a fairground ride for more than two hours after it got stuck in the air, according to reports.

Three children and two men had to be rescued from the tower-drop ‘ Eliminator ’ when it suddenly malfunctioned at Nicholas Everitt Park in Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called to the park, where the Oulton Broad Gala Day was taking place, at 5.40pm.

The riders were stuck in their safety harnesses on a vertical seating rack.

Fire crews used nine-metre ladders to rescue the trapped passengers from the high-speed ride today.

Funfair bosses reportedly tried for 40 minutes to get the ride restarted but called for emergency service back-up after a string of failed attempts.

Eyewitness Courtney Pringle said: “One of the little girls was really upset but the firefighters calmed her down.

“A lot of people were worried.”

Fire crews said no-one was injured. It is thought an electrical malfunction was to blame.

Police and ambulance crews were also at the scene.

Lowestoft South station tweeted at 6.40pm: "Currently in attendance at #OultonBroad #Lowestoft assisting people stuck in a fairground ride.

"@Norfolkfire also attending with their ladder platform, @EastEnglandAmb and @LowestoftPolice in attendance working with the organisers to work out the safest way to get the people down."

Lowestoft Station Manager, Andy Jackson, told the Eastern Daily Press the crew was happy with the result of the rescue mission.

He said: "All five casualties are on the ground and have been checked over by medical staff.

"After lifting the safety harness everyone was assisted down the ladder within 30 minutes.

"This is a rare, isolated incident and people should be aware that fairground rides are generally safe and regulated."

Mirror Online has contacted organisers for comment.
