Three cars 'set on fire' as people call 999 after seeing smoke rising

Police are investigating what they believe to be a 'deliberate' three-care blaze outside an industrial building in Ellesmere Port

Residents of the town could smell burning and see smoke rising from a small industrial estate off Thornton Road as a two cars and a campervan burned on Wednesday (September 21) night.

Several garage services and motor parts stores are located in units on Telford Road.

Commenting in a public Facebook group, one person wrote: "I'm in Whitby and I could smell burning."

Another said: "I was out, got back and could smell smoke that way."

Workers at T&C Bedrooms located on the corner of the Telford Road arrived this morning to see burnout cars and a campervan in the neighbouring carpark where small businesses, including a car rental service, are located.

Shortly after 10pm on Wednesday, one fire engine attended the blaze involving three vehicles outside retail and service units on Telford Road, Ellesmere Port.

In a statement, Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called following reports of a fire involving two cars and a campervan on Telford Road.

"On arrival, one firefighter wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet to extinguish the flames.

"The scene was then damped down."

Police are investigating what they believe to be a deliberate fire.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police told the ECHO : "Officers from Ellesmere Port Local Policing unit are appealing for information and video footage after three vehicles were damaged at an industrial estate in the town.

"At 10.19pm on Tuesday 21 September Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire outside an industrial building on Telford Road.

"The fire involved two cars and a campervan.

"The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate and enquiries are ongoing in the area.

"Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 1090516."
