Three car horror smash on A1 near Edinburgh leaves one car on its roof

Three cars were involved in a serious smash in East Lothian this morning (5 December), with one vehicle ending up on its roof.

The crash took place at around 10am on the A1 between A199 ( Tranent ) and B6363 (Gladsmuir), partially blocking the A1 in both directions.

Edinburgh Live were contacted by a reader who said that the crash involved a BMW x5, a BMW 320d and a Suzuki Swift.

Extreme weather has been battering Edinburgh and the Lothians over the last two days.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, residents were awoken by 'explosions' caused by a violent snow-and-thunderstorm. Heavy snow fell in parts of the Lothians overnight, with Midlothian particularly badly-hit.

Then on Friday and into Saturday morning, heavy rain combined with snowmelt caused flooding in Edinburgh city centre, as well as causing adverse road conditions in the south of Scotland. You can follow the latest weather and travel warnings on our live blog here.
