Three boroughs now have Covid infection rates over 2,000 - and on one day alone 10,000 new cases were recorded

Coronavirus infection rates continue to surge in Greater Manchester as the Omicron variant spreads.

Now three of our boroughs have topped infection rates of more than 2,000 per 100,000 people.

Infection rates in all ten areas are on the rise, and are all above the national average for England.

On Wednesday there were 10,804 cases recorded across Greater Manchester, which is a new record.

More than 53,000 people across Greater Manchester tested positive for the virus in the past week, a 45 per cent increase on the previous seven days.

Stockport, Salford and Wigan now have infection rates of more than 2,000.

Stockport has also replaced Salford as the area with the highest infection rates, which currently stands at 2,127.1 cases per 100,000 people.

Cases rose by 99-per-cent compared with the previous week in Wigan.

Hospital admissions

In the week ending on December 26, a total of 500 patients were admitted to Greater Manchester NHS hospitals with Covid-19. That is 182 more than the week before, a rise of 57 per cent.

On Tuesday December 28, there were 39 Mechanical Ventilation (MV) beds occupied by Covid patients in Greater Manchester NHS hospitals. That is six fewer than a week earlier.

This is the most recent available data for hospital admissions, the figures for NHS trusts are not updated daily.

Deaths

In the week ending December 29, a total of 40 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test across Greater Manchester, which is 10 fewer than the week before.

Cases reported in each of the 10 boroughs

In Bury cases rose by 38 per cent compared with the previous week, as 3,315 people tested positive.

The infection rate in the town currently stands at 1,738.3 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 4,112 people tested positive in Oldham , which was a week-on-week rise of 71 per cent.

The town's infection rate is 1,730.4 cases per 100,000 people.

In Bolton 4,349 positive tests were recorded, a week-on-week increase of 54 per cent.

The town's infection rate is currently 1,508.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Cases rose by 80 per cent week-on-week in Rochdale , as 3,962 people tested positive.

The infection rate for the town is 1771.4 cases per 100,000 people.

There were 4,701 positive tests across Trafford over the past seven days.

The infection rate rose by a quarter, and currently stands at 1,978.7 cases per 100,000 people.

Cases rose by 60 per cent in Tameside compared with the week before.

A total of 4,476 positive tests were recorded, and the borough's infection rate is 1970.8 per 100,000 people.

In Salford a total of 5,524 people tested positive, a 32 per cent increase on the seven days prior.

The city's infection rate is currently 2,102.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Cases rose by 99 per cent in Wigan compared to the previous week.

A total of 6,933 people tested positive, and the town's infection rate is currently 2,096.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Across Manchester there 10,220 positive tests, a week-on-week increase of 14 per cent.

The infection rate across the city is 1,839 cases per 100,000 people.

Cases rose by 49 per cent in Stockport , with 6,258 positive tests being recorded in the past week.

It has the highest infection rate in the region.
