Three Arsenal players get England U21 call up as Lee Carsley names Spurs pair in first squad

Lee Carsley has named Arsenal attackers Folarin Balogun and Emile Smith Rowe in his first England Under-21 squad as a much-changed group aim to overcome the disappointment of their group stage exit from the European Championship in the spring.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and midfielder Conor Gallagher, on loan from Chelsea, are included in the 24-man squad in addition to Tottenham pair Ryan Sessegnon and Oliver Skipp. Tyreece John-Jules, the Arsenal forward on loan at Blackpool for the season, has been brought in.

New Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is among those no longer eligible for inclusion, so too the team's record goalscorer Eddie Nketiah. Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi is the most notable name to have been omitted from the last cycle.

Carsley will be officially unveiled as Aidy Boothroyd's replacement later this morning and will field questions around his selection decisions. The former Everton and Ireland midfielder, who will be assisted by former Arsenal and Chelsea left back Ashley Cole, will open his tenure with a game against Romania in Bucharest on September 3 before hosting Kosovo in Milton Keynes four days later.

Goalkeepers: Joe Bursik (Stoke City), Etienne Green (St. Etienne), Josh Griffiths (Lincoln City, loan from West Bromwich Albion)

Defenders: Max Aarons (Norwich City), Levi Samuels-Colwill (Huddersfield Town, loan from Chelsea), Charlie Cresswell (Leeds United), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Anderlecht, loan from Manchester City), Valentino Livramento (Southampton), Ryan Sessegnon (Tottenham Hotspur), Luke Thomas (Leicester City)

Midfielders: Tommy Doyle (Manchester City), Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace, loan from Chelsea), Jimmy Garner (Nottingham Forest, loan from Manchester United), Curtis Jones (Liverpool; suspended vs Kosovo), Cole Palmer (Manchester City), Jacob Ramsey (Aston Villa), Oliver Skipp (Tottenham Hotspur)

Forwards: Folarin Balogun (Arsenal), Rhian Brewster (Sheffield United), Harvey Elliott (Liverpool), Tyreece John-Jules (Blackpool, loan from Arsenal), Noni Madueke (PSV Eindhoven), Emile Smith-Rowe (Arsenal).
