Three arrests as police tackle crowds gathering in Swansea

Three people were arrested and five section 35 notices were issued as police tackled anti-social behaviour in Swansea.

South Wales Police carried out patrols in the SA1 area of the city on Saturday, April 24 as large numbers of people gathered to enjoy the sunshine, as officers responded to reports of people who had been "drinking heavily" and "behaving in anti-social ways".

Video being shared on Facebook shows the crowds gathered in the city with police trying to maintain order.

This comes after temporary fencing was put in place in Ice House Square, near Kings Road, in an attempt to stop crowds gathering there after the area was left covered in litter in recent weeks following the gathering of large crowds.

Throughout the pandemic, the area has become a popular spot for takeaway drinkers and in recent weeks has even seen a large crowd of "hundreds" dancing and singing together, while last weekend residents described the litter left behind as the "worst they have seen".

On Saturday, officers carried out patrols in the SA1, marina and Oystermouth Road areas where "a large number of people were congregating".

South Wales Police superintendent Steve Jones said: "We focused our patrols on areas in Swansea where a large number of people were congregating - such as SA1, the Marina and Oystermouth Road.

"It’s understandable that everyone’s keen to make the most of the good weather. This isn’t a problem if people behave responsibly, sensibly, and are mindful of the Covid restrictions that are still in place. However, a minority were behaving in a way that was just unpleasant for other people.

"Our officers were at these hotspots and kept a close eye on these locations during their patrols. Those found committing anti-social behaviour were dealt with accordingly."

The force confirmed that two arrests were made on suspicion of the possession of drugs with the intent to supply, with a third arrest on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

Officers also issued five section 35 notices on Saturday, which give officers the powers to exclude people from the area.

Superintendent Jones added: "Officers adopted a robust approach and made two arrests on suspicion of possession of drugs with the intent to supply, and one arrest for suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. Five section 35 notices were also issued.

"We will continue to work closely with the local authority, and other key partners, to ensure we address the concerns raised by local residents and the wider community."

This comes as Dyfed-Powys Police confiscated 150 bottles and cans from underage drinkers in the Llanelli and Burry Port areas on Saturday. The force confirmed that "multiple" section 35 dispersal notices had also been issued.
