Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in south London.

Metropolitan Police officers and the London Ambulance Service were called to a house on Furze Road in Thornton Heath, Croydon at around 9.20am on Wednesday.

The 53-year-old woman was pronounced dead, but the cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Two men and a woman aged between 44 and 69 were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification is set to take place in due course.

Officers are also trying to find the woman’s next of kin.

Detective Sergeant Suzanne Harris, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts remain with the victim and her family at this difficult time.

"While we recognise the concern an incident like this will cause, I'd like to reassure locals that we believe this to be an isolated incident. Residents can expect to see an increase in police presence over the coming days and must not hesitate to speak to police on the ground if they have any questions or concerns.

"In the meantime, my team and are working at pace to piece together the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and are asking anyone with information to get in touch as a matter of urgency."

Information can be shared with the Met via 101, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting reference 2293/27MAY.
