Three arrested for 'Covid breaches' at Cork anti-lockdown protest

Three men will appear in court in two weeks time after being arrested for suspected Covid-19 breaches at an anti-lockdown protest.

The three people were charged with violations of Public Health Regulations after an incident that happened on St Patrick's Bridge in Cork on Thursday.

Gardai approached a small number of protesters at around 4pm, and after speaking with group, found that some members failed to comply with officers.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí have arrested and charged three men in relation to breaches of Covid-19 Public Health Regulations that occurred on St. Patrick’s Bridge, Cork on April 1, 2021.

"At approximately 4pm Gardaí engaged with a small group protesting against current Public Health restrictions on St. Patrick’s Bridge.

"As has been throughout the pandemic, Gardaí utilised the 4 Es approach of engage, explain, encourage and as a last resort, enforce. Three of the group failed to comply with Gardaí and were arrested for suspected breaches of the Health Act, 1947.

"The three men were brought to Bridewell Garda Station where they were later charged. All three are due to appear before Cork City District Court on April, 14 2021 at 10.30am."
