Three arrested and two scrambler bikes seized after off-roaders tear through street and field

Scrambler bikes were spotted by police being ridden "dangerously and in an anti-social manner", leading to three arrests.

Officers were deployed to Waresley Crescent in Croxteth just before 3.05pm earlier today.

The bikes were next seen on a field, close to Parkview Road.

Officers stationed themselves at the exits to the field, and a short time later, three "males" were arrested.

Two scrambler bikes were seized.

The ages of those involved, or the offences for which they were arrested, is as yet unknown.

The arrests were part of Operation Brookdale, the ongoing Merseyside Police response targeting the illegal and anti-social use of off-road bikes across the county.

It is believed officers used their own quad bikes and scramblers to catch the suspects.

The National Police Air Service was also seen in the sky, patrolling the incident from above.

Operation Brookdale was first introduced in 2012.

Off-road vehicles have blighted communities across the region over recent years, with their use even being linked to shootings, fatal crashes and a murder.

After being seized, bikes are usually crushed in a public display intended to showcase efforts to crackdown on menacing riders.

Thugs often use the vehicles to flee shootings, thinking chasing police officers are unable to follow them onto narrow alleyways or parkland.

The bikes linked to criminality are typically stolen from owners who use them legally.

Where possible, seized vehicles are returned to their owners.

The problem came to the fore once more, two days before Christmas, when James Malins, 18, was killed in a crash between a stolen scrambler bike and a car.

The teen was riding with a fellow passenger when it collided with a Volkswagen Tiguan on Booker Avenue, Allerton, close to West Allerton train station, at 8.40pm on December 23.

The other rider, also 18, sustained serious injuries in the incident.
