Three arrested and four injured in protest outside Oldham factory

Protesters have gathered outside a factory in Oldham owned by an Israeli military technology firm.

Several people have been injured in the crowds, which formed outside Ferranti Technologies on Greenacres Road this morning on Monday (June 21).

Several windows have been smashed and the building has been vandalised with red paint.

Flares have also been let off outside the site.

Four people have been treated for minor injuries at the scene, NWAS confirmed.

Three men have also been arrested and remain in police custody for questioning.

It’s believed the protestors are demonstrating against the firm in support of Palestine.

The site is owned by Elbit Systems, which produces specialist electrical equipment for military use.

A 200-strong protest was also held outside the building on May 26.

Eleven days of conflict last month led to more than 240 Palestinians being killed and 12 Israelis, according to official reports, before a ceasefire began.

Elbit Systems purchased Ferranti Technologies in 2007 for £15m.

On its website, Ferranti Technologies is described as 'an electronic engineering and manufacturing company, specialising in supplying the aerospace and defence industry with a wide range of advanced technology for air, land and marine applications'.

Globally, Elbit Systems produces a range of electrical items for use by military forces including drones and advanced munitions such as rockets, long-range missiles and bombs, according to the Israeli firm's website.

A spokesman for Ferranti Technologies declined to comment when approached by the Manchester Evening News.

Elbit Systems has also been approached for comment.

The role of Oldham's Ferranti factory was discussed at an Oldham Council meeting in July 2019 , after protesters had climbed onto the roof.

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service said: “Four people treated for minor injuries. No one has been taken to hospital.”

Police remain at the scene this afternoon.
