Police arrested three people on Edinburgh's Royal Mile last night after local students protested over tuition fees.

The three men, aged 19, 22 and 25, were among a group taking part in a protest at the local Lib Dem office in Haymarket in the early evening. The group then moved towards the town centre.

Police caught up with the group on the Royal Mile and three were taken to St Leonard's police station. Police confirmed they were charged for allegedly initially refusing to tell officers their details.

They were then released on bail. Charges could be subject to change once the case is passed to the procurator fiscal.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said:

"Following a minor incident that happened in Edinburgh yesterday, three males, aged 19, 25, and 22, were arrested and charged. They were released to appear at court at a later date."

The three men, who have not been named, are expected to appear in court in January.
