Three areas of Wales with more than 100 Covid cases per 100,000 people

Three parts of Wales still have Covid-19 infection rates in excess of 100 cases per 100,000 people.

New data released by the Welsh Government and Public Health Wales has revealed the number of cases of Covid-19 in every community in Wales.

Public Health Wales publishes the figures and this data was published on Friday, April 30. It provides the numbers for areas with an average of 7,000 people, called middle super output areas (MSOA). In practice this means there are statistics for areas like Canton in Cardiff, Morriston in Swansea, and Porth in Rhondda.

The data shows there are three places in Wales with more than 100 cases per 100,000 of population – down from four from last week.

The areas with the most cases are:

  • Sketty, Swansea 173.1
  • Bala and Mawddwy, Gwynedd 166.6
  • Shaftesbury and Crindai, Newport 118.1
  • Hermitage and Whitegate, Wrexham 91.4
  • Pen-y-ffordd and Higher Kinnerton, Flintshire 81.4
  • Wrexham west, Wrexham 72
  • Trowbridge, Cardiff 64.4
  • Llanrumney south, Cardiff 60.7
  • Cadoxton and Bryn-coch, Neath Port Talbot 58.9
  • Risca west, Caerphilly 57.9

This map shows the number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 people for each area in the last seven days. If you can't use this map there is also a chart you can use to search for your community at the bottom of this article.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers smaller areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 significantly. You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

For example, in Newport, Shaftesbury and Crindai and Victoria and Somerton have similar numbers of cases at eight and six respectively. However in terms of cases per 100,000 of population Shaftesbury and Crindai has 118 but Victoria & Somerton has only 51. This because Victoria and Somerton has a higher population than Shaftesbury and Crindai.

The three areas with highest infection rates in each local authority

(The weekly infection rates for the previous seven days per 100,000 of population. The data is based on the rolling seven-day average between April 18 and April 25).

If there are fewer than three MSOA listed in a local authority area it is because not enough places have more than two cases. The great news is that most places in Wales now have almost no cases.
