Three American students rescued from base of 60m cliff after incoming tide trapped them on Co Kerry beach

Three American students were rescued by the local coastguard after they became stranded by the incoming tide on a beach.

The women, who are aged in their early 20s, were trapped by the incoming current at the base of a 60 metre cliff near Slea Head.

The alarm was raised around 9pm last night and up to 20 members of Dingle coastguard rushed to the scene.

Valentia Lifeboat and the Rescue 115 helicopter from Shannon were also tasked to assist the rescue.

The three students were trapped on a small ledge and members of the coastguard had to climb down the cliff using ropes to rescue them, RTE reports.

The women were brought up to the top, one at a time, while the coastguard helicopter and Valentia Lifeboat provided spotlights during the two-hour rescue.

They were suffering from early stages of hypothermia and were taken to University Hospital Kerry for medical treatment.

Frank Heidke, Head of the Dingle Coast Guard unit, said the rescue proved to be very challenging.

He explained:"Because of the location we couldn’t rescue them by helicopter winch.

"There was a danger that the strong downdraught from the helicopter hitting the high cliff could blow them off the ledge, so we decided to go down on the ropes.

Coast Guard member Tom Kennedy added: "They were getting hypothermic and the ledge was in a very awkward area, difficult to access. It was great to have the big lights of the lifeboat and the helicopter. It made our job a lot easier."

And another member Carol Ui Laoithe added the women were "very shaken" after their ordeal and were "very very cold" as they did not have warm clothing.

It's understood the three young women are currently spending a semester studying in Dingle.
