Threave Rovers Youth Development celebrate girls side winning Under-13s Kirsty Howat League

Girls’ football at Threave Rovers never used to exist, but over the last few years the girls teams have developed well, to the extent that last year the under-13s were able to win the Under-13s Kirsty Howat League for Dumfries and Galloway.

On Saturday, Threave Rovers Youth Development chairman, Mark Geddes, invited the team of 2018 U13s to Threave Rovers Social Club to announce the good news. Kirsty Howat, originally from Dumfries and now a forward with Glasgow City, kindly gave up her time to come along and present each of the girls with a medal and the trophy to the team.

This is a fantastic achievement as the girls’ first time playing in any league was in 2017, when they were very much the underdogs. But, under the watchful eyes of coaches Shane Little, Ross Cunningham, Ned Shuttleworth and Lewis Reid, the girls have gained skills and confidence which prepared them for the 2018 league. The girls’ enthusiasm, dedication to training and the positive guidance of the coaches stood them in good stead for the 2018 league, the result showing that hard work and strong teamwork pay off.

This year sees the girls moving up into the Under-15s South West Christie Murray League where they currently stand fifth, competing against the likes of Hamilton and Kilmarnock, as well as the two local Queen of the South teams and Millenium.

Threave now have groups of girls in U9, U11, U13 and U15, which is amazing progress, all enjoying their sport.

If anyone would like to join in please come along and try. The under-19s train on a Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm, the under-11s on a Thursday from 6pm to 7pm and the under-13/15s from 7 to 8.30pm.

All sessions are at Birkland Road, Castle Douglas.
