Threave Rovers under-15s lift Alex Whiteside Trophy after beating Greystone Reds

Threave Rovers Under-15s rounded off their season in style.

The Castle Douglas youngsters beat Greystone Reds 2-1 in Newton Stewart on Sunday to lift the Alex Whiteside Trophy.

Coach Mark Geddes said: “I’m beyond proud of these boys, as many of them have been with the club since they were five-years-old and they are all a tremendous bunch of lads.

“We’ve had a good season, full of highs and lows, but this was a great way to finish off the season. It was great to see them lifting the trophy and sharing the moment with the coaches and the parents.”

The game was the final fixture in the Dumfries and Galloway Youth Football League season.

Threave started on the front foot and took the lead after a quarter of an hour when a neat passing move sent Lewis through on goal and his cool finish found the bottom corner.

And they added a second when Ollie G was fouled around 25 yards from goal and Thomas hit a perfect free-kick into the net despite the best efforts of the opposition’s goalkeeper.

Greystone pulled one back just before half-time to set up a tense second half, with the Threave youngsters reminded nothing was won or lost until full-time.

Their opponents pushed for an equaliser with Threave throwing bodies on the line to preserve their lead.

And they could have added a killer third on the break, Ollie G unlucky to see his shot hit the bar. And there was some late drama when the Greystone keeper came up for a corner, the ball bouncing about in the box before a shot smacked the post and was cleared.

Thanks go to Alex Whiteside and everyone at Galloway Thistle for their hospitality and sponsoring the trophies. Alex also sponsored the man-of-the-match award, which was won by Threave’s Thomas Brown.

Thanks also to the parents for their support, the players for giving everything and the match officials.
