Threave Rovers thump Wigtown to stay top of South of Scotland League

Threave Rovers dished out six of the best as they thumped Wigtown to stay top of the South of Scotland League on Saturday.

Aiden Kerr’s deflected effort was the only goal of the first half but Dan Carmichael and Tommy Smith soon extended the advantage.

Stuart Douglas and Alex Henderson also got in on the act – the latter scoring his first goal since returning to the club – before Carmichael rounded off the scoring with his second.

Threave boss Vinnie Parker said: “Wigtown were very well organised. They came with a game plan and put players behind the ball. We had to be patient and the longer the game went on, the more and more chances we created.

“We scored six goals but it could easily have been another six.

“It was a very polished performance.

“Alex was with us before and went to Heston but with what happened there he’s come back to us.

“He came off the bench and scored a great goal – one of the best goals I’ve seen for a while.

“It has been a good start to the season. We are just taking each game as it comes – we saw off Mids during the week then Wigtown on Saturday.”

Threave are one of just two sides to make a perfect start to the season, goal difference keeping them ahead of Abbey Vale at the top of the table.

Threave beat Creetown on Wednesday night and now prepare for before a derby clash with St Cuthbert Wanderers on Saturday. But Parker wasn’t getting too concerned about the local rivalry earlier this week.

He said: “It’s just another game for us. Creetown are the main concern for us this week and after that we’ll start looking ahead to Saturday.”

Threave will be without Ross Green due to a hamstring injury while Alan Birsdall is likely to be sidelined for some time.
