Threave Rovers thump Bonnyton Thistle 9-0 to begin new decade on a high

Threave Rovers strengthened their position at the top of the South of Scotland League with a thumping win over Bonnyton Thistle.

Dan Thom headed in the opener before the visitors almost drew level, Kyle Gilroy rounded goalie Jake Gemmell only to see his shot cleared by Hugh Cameron.

Threave soon added their second as Andrew Donley teed up Jack McMurdo to score. McMurdo turned provider for the third as he played in Thom to slot home, the same player completing his hat-trick from the spot after Donley was fouled.

There was no let up to the onslaught after the break, a long ball from Gemmell finding Thom who added his fourth.

He could even have had a fifth but his shot was saved, Donley on hand to score the rebound.

Donley then made it seven as he benefitted from good work from Thomas Bowden, a free-kick then providing Thom with his fifth and Threave’s eighth.

The final goal came when Lewis Todd picked out Kieran McKie, who rounded the visiting keeper to score.

The win leaves Threave 10 points clear of Mid Annandale, who have played three games more. Abbey Vale are 12 points behind in second place but have three games in hand, while Stranraer are one place and one point further back with four games in hand over Sam Warren’s side.

This weekend they are once again at Meadow Park as they welcome Wigtown & Bladnoch to Castle Douglas.
