Threave Rovers suffer heartbreaking late defeat to Stranraer in South of Scotland League Cup final

The replayed League Cup final ended in the same scoreline as the original match that was abandoned.

Stranraer ran out 3-2 winners over Threave Rovers at Newton Stewart, having been minutes away from a similar extra-time victory before the lights went out in November’s encounter.

The reserves took the lead when Reece Agnew rounded the Threave goalie and slotted home but Andrew Donley equalised for Threave with a spectacular volley.

And the same player was involved when the Castle Douglas side took the lead just before the break as Donley’s free-kick hit the bar and Jack McMurdo headed in the rebound.

Dean Fyfe levelled from the spot midway through the second half and Stranraer ensured there was no need for extra-time when Gary McCutcheon’s fine free-kick found the net in stoppage time.

Threave will be looking to bounce back this weekend when they head to Wigtown and Bladnoch in the league.

The Castle Douglas side are top of the table and seven points ahead of Mid Annandale who have played four games more.
