Threave Rovers ready to fight to the end to win Scottish Cup clash with Preston Athletic

Threave Rovers will need to fight to the end to make sure they reach the first round proper of the Scottish Cup this weekend.

Vinnie Parker takes his side to Prestonpans to face Preston Athletic in the preliminary round on Saturday.

And their East of Scotland opponents have had a great start to their campaign, only goal difference keeping them off the top of Conference B.

Parker said: “Me and Kevin Somerville went up on Tuesday night and watched them play Edinburgh South. We’ve had two reports done on them and they match up with each other.

“It’s more about us and how we approach it rather than what they offer but I’m comfortable with what I’ve seen.

“What was very pleasing is they’ve got a pitch like ourselves – a nice, big grass pitch which is in great condition. They try to play football, which always suits us as well, so it should be a decent game of football.

“They hadn’t conceded until Tuesday when we watched them. They play right up until the final whistle, they go for it right at the very end, so we need to be very wary of that.”

Threave will welcome Phil Middlemiss and Ross Green back into the fold while Ryan Adamson faces a race to be fit. Veteran defender Liam Patterson is out with a long term injury.

The Castle Douglas side were left without a game at the weekend after their fixture against Abbey Vale was postponed due to their opponents having a number of players self-isolating.

It’s the second Threave game to be cancelled in recent weeks after their encounter with Lochar Thistle was rained off.

Parker said: “We’ve got three games in hand now and we’ve got to get them played. I spoke to Scott Wilby at Lochar on Sunday and we’re keen to get the fixture played soon.

“I think Saturday creates a dangerous situation.

“I’m not questioning their integrity at all – they’ve had a lot of boys out with Covid - but what’s to stop teams on a Saturday turning round when they’ve got key players missing saying they’ve got a Covid outbreak?

“I think there should be some sort of proof or a bit of structure like league teams have.”
