Threave Rovers boss says long way to go in South of Scotland League title race

Threave Rovers boss Vinnie Parker says there’s still a long way to go in the South of Scotland League title race.

The Castle Douglas side went into the festive break four points behind St Cuthbert Wanderers.

But with the action resuming this weekend, Parker believes there are still plenty more twists and turns to come.

He said: “I’m not underestimating the task. Four points is quite a lot to chase down at this level but we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and putting points on the board.

“No league medals are handed out in January - there’s still 10 or 11 games to go and some tough games for both teams. You can’t rule out the likes of Abbey Vale coming back either and other teams will have a lot to say on the outcome.”

Threave were due to return from the break against Upper Annandale on Saturday.

But that game has been postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak among players at the Moffat club.

The Covid situation also saw plans for Threave to train during the festive period scrapped.

Parker said: “We were due to be in but we had to cancel the session due to the Covid numbers in the area.

“It was getting pretty alarming and we’ve got a duty of care to the boys so we decided to call the session off.”

There are unlikely to be any new signings at Rovers before the end of the season but the manager hasn’t ruled out boosting his squad another way.

He said: “We’ve had a look at the young boys from our under-17s and even a 15-year-old boy who is coming through.

“We’re doing quite a lot of work with the youths and concentrating on that pathway.

“We’re hoping to bring one or two through that way before the end of the season, but in terms of bringing anybody new in it will be next season.”
