Threave Rovers boss blasts side's second half display against Stranraer

Threave Rovers boss Vinnie Parker has blasted his side for their second half performance against Stranraer on Saturday.

The teams were all square at the break after Threave’s Tommy Smith had cancelled out Harry Mitchell’s opener.

But Gordon Forbes put Stranraer back in front in the second half with Reece Agnew extending the advantage before Mitchell completed the scoring.

Parker said: “We had 11 players who didn’t turn up in the second half, from our goalie to our captain, and we’ll be addressing it in training.

“It seems to be a trend, certainly for our away games. We are unbeaten at home but I think when it comes to away games, especially second half, we’ve been found wanting. I don’t know if we’re trying to be too pretty or waiting for someone else to go and win the game for us.

“The pitch wasn’t great and the wind was bad but it’s the same for both teams.

“In the first half I thought we stuck to the game plan, we created chances and could possibly have had two penalties.

“Ross Green came off injured after 20 minutes with a head knock and we had to change things. I thought we were pretty comfortable come half-time.

“In the second half we didn’t perform.

“We didn’t stick to the game plan, we started looking to put balls in behind them and going long.

“Stranraer were really up for it. They’ve got a couple of boys back and their game plan worked. We didn’t turn up and when you do that away to teams like Stranraer you get beat. I’ve no arguments there, the better team won.”

The result means Threave remain four points behind South of Scotland League leaders St Cuthbert Wanderers, who were in Scottish Cup action, with just one game in hand.

However, the gaffer said: “I’m not overly concerned about it, I don’t think it changes too much. There’s a long way to go, we have a lot of away games and it was always going to be difficult – it’s the same for Saints. We’ve still got to play each other and it’s still down to what we do.”

This weekend Threave head to Dumfries to face Lochar Thistle, the side they recently knocked out of the SFA South Region Challenge Cup – earning themselves a home game against Civil Service Strollers in the third round.

Callum Williams will be missing this weekend but Ewan Gourlay and Ryan Adamson are available while Parker is also hoping the head knock Ross Green suffered against Stranraer won’t keep him out.

He added: “We need to get the job done, we need a better performance from Saturday - especially the second half. We need a reaction. We’ve a few hard games coming up and we need to dust ourselves down and get back to it.”
