Threave Rovers boss blasts performance despite 2-1 win over Lochar Thistle

Threave Rovers boss Sam Warren reckons Saturday’s display against Lochar Thistle was one of the worst from his side this season.

The Castle Douglas outfit emerged as 2-1 winners at Lochar Thistle to make it five wins from five in the South of Scotland League.

But Warren felt his side were fortunate to escape with all three points.

He said: “Performance wise we were poor. We were pretty lucky to get the three points in the end.

“Lochar played quite well but our performance was probably the poorest of the season.

“I’m not sure what it was. It may have been going from the high of the Scottish Cup the week before to going back to normal league business and it was perhaps a bit unfair on Lochar not getting a point.

“I told them after the game that these are the kind of matches where you need to grind out a performance to get a result.”

Threave had got off to the perfect start when Scott Milligan put them ahead with barely two minutes on the clock, only for Liam Robertson to bring Lochar level midway through the half.

It took until 15 minutes from time for Threave to restore their lead, Milligan playing in Dan Thom to score what proved to be the winner.

Better will be needed this weekend when Threave head to Fife to face Burntisland Shipyard in the SFA South Region Challenge Cup.

Warren said: “We’ve not played them for a few years. I think the last time I saw them I was playing for St Cuthbert Wanderers but we know it’ll be a tough game.

“It’s a lot of travelling. It’s two and a half hours up the road so it’s a nine o’clock start on Saturday which means we’ve lost a few boys due to work commitments.

“It’s a game we’re looking to win and we want to build up some momentum and a winning run again as that came to an end in the Scottish Cup.”
