Thousands turn up at Welsh rugby club to celebrate the life of player who died aged just 20

Welsh rugby players and a TV presenter have joined more than 2,500 people in celebrating the life of a young hooker who died last month aged just 20.

Owen Bennett only made the move from Caerphilly RFC to Nelson this summer but both clubs had to announce the tragic news that he had passed away.

'Benny' had progressed through the junior, youth and senior ranks at Caerphilly and represented the Dragons at U16 and U18 levels before moving on to pack down for Nelson in Division One East of the WRU National League.

His time at the Cheesemen was marked on Sunday with a celebration of his life when a Caerphilly Select XV played a Benny's Baa-Baas XV at their Vetro Recruitment Stadium in the town.

Among those playing for the Baa-Baas was Owen's father Paul, who was presented with the trophy afterwards by TV presenter and former Caerphilly Youth player Matt Johnson.

The 36-year-old, whose television work includes ITV's This Morning as well as being a reporter on Surprise Surprise, has been helping organise a mental health awareness day at Caerphilly RFC for a some time now.

And notable Welsh rugby players, who have had battles with mental health, will talk about their experiences at the club on the evening of Friday, September 13.

But Sunday was all about honouring the life of 'Benny'.

"We think more than 2,500 turned up and that was a fantastic number," said Caerphilly RFC chairman Gareth Ashman. "It was a massive celebration of Owen's life supported by the community from far and wide.

"Our local rivals Senghenydd RFC came down in force and lots of rugby clubs came down to support their friend.

"There was a massive contingent from Bargoed where Owen was from. We had a minute's silence then a minute's applause and Benny's dad Paul played the whole match.

"We couldn't get him off the pitch. He was in the Army and played rugby there. He came down to play for his son and Benny's Baa-Baas beat Caerphilly.

"You always hear about people being the life and soul and Owen really was. He was always having a laugh.

"When you think he's been playing senior team rugby for probably two years, he was a bit of a beast, in great shape and a very physical player.

"He never took a step backwards on the pitch and he was the nicest guy in the world off it.

"We've got a huge junior and mini section here at Caerphilly and those youngsters aspire to be like Owen having seen him come through the ranks.

"In his first year out of youth he quickly became our first-choice hooker. He played a lot of first team rugby for us in his last year in youth rugby."

A statement on the Nelson Facebook account at the time of his death, said of their young hooker: " Owen was a promising prospect and an all round great character, having transferred to us recently from Caerphilly RFC we were over the moon to have him ply his trade in the Unicorn Jersey.

"His passing will leave a hole in the club and will be devastating for his family and close friends. They remain in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time."

News of Owen's death saw tributes flood in from friends, former players and clubs on social media.

Former Tonga, Pontypool and Ebbw Vale player Manu Tu'ipulotu and ex-Caerphilly hooker and skipper Chris Ferris were among those to pass on their condolences.
