More than 170,000 people sign up to be NHS volunteers to help coronavirus fight in less than a day

The nationwide call for NHS volunteers to help fight coronavirus in the UK has seen 170,000 people sign up in less than 16 hours.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said volunteers would help boost the government's ability to protect those most vulnerable to coronavirus and provide vital support for medics, reports the Mirror.

Anyone who is over 18, fit and healthy and free of coronavirus symptoms can help.

He said on Tuesday: "We are seeking a quarter of a million volunteers, people in good health, to help the NHS, for shopping, for delivery of medicines and to support those who are shielded to protect their own health."

Launching the appeal for help, Dr Nikki Kanani, GP and NHS Director of Primary Care, said: "Coronavirus is the biggest challenge we have ever faced, which is why we’re rallying the troops and telling the public: your NHS needs you.

Matt Hancock launched the NHS Volunteers scheme (PA)

"Across the country people are playing their part in the fight against the virus by staying home for the next 12 weeks, to protect themselves, others and the NHS.

"But many of those shielding will need our support to do that, and by signing up to be an NHS Volunteer Responder, people who are well can do their bit too."

Dr Kanani described it as "one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments where a single action from one person can be the difference between life and death for another."

Additionally, "simple acts of kindness are going to make all the difference in keeping some of the most vulnerable people well and out of hospital".

The ExCel centre (PA)

The Health Secretary announced a new hospital will open at the ExCeL Centre in East London with two wards for 2,000 people with medics assisted by the Military.

The hospital, dubbed The Nightingale, will open next week.

A similar centre will open at the former GMEX Centre in Manchester, the M.E.N has been told.

The temporary hospital could be set up at the Manchester Central convention centre to care for coronavirus patients.
