Thousands sign petition calling for Dublin Airport to install new water stations to reduce the need for single use plastic bottles

Almost five thousand people have signed a petition urging Dublin Airport to install new water filling stations in a bid to help the environment.

There are currently a number of water stations at the airport but they are more suited to drinking from directly rather than refilling reusable bottles.

The organiser of the petition , Lisa Murphy, said this leads to passengers buying single use plastic bottles of water instead.

The petition reads: "Dublin Airport is a very busy airport. I believe their corporate environmental responsibility to provide well marked water stations with filtered water to cut down use of single use plastics.

"31. 5 million people passengers passed through Dublin Airport in 2018 - If the Dublin Airport Authority encouraged people to refill their water bottles - imagine the thousands if not millions of single use plastic water bottles that would be saved from landfill / plastic heaps.

"It's worth a reminder that it is estimated that these will take over 500 years to decompose - all of the plastic ever made is still here on this planet increasingly polluting it. IT HAS TO STOP !!"

Lisa said she has written to daa previously about the issue, who have replied with a map of current water stations at the airport.

But she said she found the stations to be unsuitable for refilling reusable bottles and add the water "tastes horrible".

She said: "We are all trying to stop single use plastic. Increasingly we are trying to carry water bottles with us in order not to buy plastic bottles of water.

"The place where this can be tricky is in Airports. While some International Airports have really good refilling stations that have filtered water and have a dial above outlining how many plastic bottles have been saved by its use."

A spokesperson for daa told Dublin Live: "We currently have 23 water stations across both terminals in T1 and T2 and we are adding to that number at all times.

"Our hydration stations have been there for some time."
