Thousands sign online petition to save The Bernard Shaw outdoor area from closing

Tens of thousands of people have signed an online petition to save The Bernard Shaw after it emerged that the popular beer garden may be closed down after being refused planning permission to keep its outdoor eating and drinking area.

The petition has been signed by nearly 14,440 people with a goal of 25,000.

The outdoor area of the vibrant Portobello establishment includes a pizza restaurant inside a double-decker bus.

Dublin City Council seem set to implement an enforcement closure on The Bernard Shaw on South Richmond Street.

The pub was initially granted retention permission and a further three years of temporary planning permission.

This temporary solution came after the expiry of a short term grant for the beer garden, smoking area and bus.

According to The Times, however, An Bord Pleanála has upheld an appeal by a local resident against the council's decision to extend temporary planning.

The lands adjacent to the pub are due to be upgraded with housing, shops, offices, a restaurant, a cinema and community sports centre.

The board found that to grant further temporary permission to The Bernard Shaw would be "inconsistent with the emerging pattern of development in the vicinity" and delay the project above.
