Thousands sent home as coronavirus case confirmed at Aegon UK offices in Edinburgh

Thousands of financial services workers have been sent home after at least one coronavirus case was confirmed at the Aegon offices in Edinburgh.

The financial services company confirmed on Friday that a staff member had been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Some of the company's staff will be working from home using laptops, others were told not to attend the offices at the Gyle.

Aegon is the second financial services company in Edinburgh to be affected by the virus, earlier today it emerged the Lloyds Banking Group office in Fountainbridge would shut for a deep clean following a confirmed case of Covid-19.

A voicemail message on Aegon's main switchboard said there had been a "single confirmed Covid-19 case."

The company told customers on Twitter: "I’m sorry you’ve been unable to contact us this morning. The office is closed due to a single confirmed Covid-19 case."

Edinburgh Live understands more than 2,000 employees are affected by the change, as the company's business continuity plan was activated on Friday morning.

One person told us: "2000 sent home after 3 people diagnosed."

The news comes amid another sharp increase in confirmed coronavirus cases in Scotland. The Scottish Government says there are now 85 people with Covid-19 in the country, with eight new cases in the Lothians.
