Thousands raised to support family of killed landlord

A fundraising page set up to support the family of murdered pub landlord Christian Thornton has already raised thousands of pounds.

It was launched following the horrific killing of the husband and dad in the grounds of his own pub, the Hammer & Pincers, in Widnes on Sunday afternoon.

The Gofundme page stood at just below £8,000 this afternoon, with a target of £20,000.

It was set up by Mike O'Connor, who wrote: "Chris in his role as landlord of the Hammer & Pincers was actively involved within the local community & helped to raise thousands of pounds for charities, as well as supporting the local music scene and much more."

Mr Thornton, 49, nicknamed "Tigger", was stabbed to death outside his pub at 3.20pm on Sunday.

Today a man appeared in court charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon following an incident outside a pub in Widnes.

He is next due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on the morning of Thursday, August 15.

A 39-year-old woman who was arrested as part of the investigation has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Tributes left on the GoFundMe include from Barbara Arrowsmith, who said: "Shocked that a hard working man can be murdered for just doing his job. May he rest in peace."

Dianne Jones said: "So sorry for your loss. No words suffice. Love and sympathy to all of Chris’s family & friends."

And Damian McGillicuddy added: "A tragic waste but we obviously all have fond memories of Tigger and that is an amazing legacy. Let's hope we treat our fellow man better after this, something good to come out of it in his name."
