Thousands of pounds were today being raised in memory of a homeless man found dying outside the entrance to the Houses of Parliament.

Gyula Remes, 43, was discovered by British Transport Police at Westminster Underground station at about 11pm on Tuesday. Officers administered first aid but the Hungarian national died in hospital early yesterday.

A JustGiving appeal set up in his memory had raised more than £2,000 for a homeless charity by 10am today.

A message on the page says: “Many will rightly want to debate the best thing to do about rough sleeping, but we thought that the best gesture that would be open to everyone across the parliamentary estate might be to donate to Streetlink.”

According to his friend Gabor Kasza, 22, Mr Remes had been drinking and was given a cigarette, which he suspected was laced with the drug spice.

Mr Kasza said his friend had begun work as a chef assistant.
