Thousands raised for tragic Scots mum's wedding spent on funeral after cancer death

Thousands of pounds raised in a bid to ensure a Scots mum with cancer got her dream wedding will now go towards her funeral after she died just two weeks before the big day.

Gemma Mcgowan, 29, was one of just three people in the world to be diagnosed with a rare form of terminal cancer, called Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the nasal cavity.

Donations poured in from strangers after a campaign was launched to help the mum, from Paisley, marry her partner Steven this summer before she passed away.

But she died last month before making it down the aisle after doctors said there was nothing more they could do.

In a heartbreaking post, Steven paid tribute to his "soulmate" and described her as the "life and soul of every party".

He said: "It is breaking my heart having to write this but yesterday morning my soulmate Gemma Mcgowan sadly lost her battle with cancer.

"She fought this horrible disease right to the end. She would always crack a smile and make light of the situation but that was just Gemma. She was the most kind hearted person you could ever meet, she was the life and soul of every party.

"Words will never be enough to explain how much you will be missed ma dear. I will miss you soo much, you will never be forgotten Arran will always know who his mum was.

"Take care of yourself up there at least you are not in pain anymore.

"Save me a seat at the big table I will see you again.

"I love you soo much RIP Geebs."

The pair had been due to get married on June 11 at Dalmeny Park House Hotel following the appeal by Wedding Wish Makers.

A post by the organisation when Gemma passed away, read: "It’s with a heavy heart we are writing these words but sadly Gemma passed away yesterday. Our thoughts are with Steven, Arran and to all of their friends and family at this hard time.

"If you have been following our appeal you will know that we have been raising money for their wedding. We have made the decision to pass this money onto Steven and the couples beautiful baby Arran."

Over £5,000 has been raised for the family, with donations still coming in following her death and the organisation has now announced the money will go towards her funeral and headstone.

"We want to thank each and everyone of you again for your very generous donations for Steven and Gemma’s wedding, as you know Gemma sadly passed away and the money was used to pay for her funeral... We paid this to the funeral directors yesterday.

"All monies left over will be transferred to Steven to help pay for Gemma’s headstone. We wanted to take this opportunity and post the link again in case anyone else would like to donate to help pay for the headstone", a post on the fundraising page read.

You can still donate to Gemma's fundraiser here.
