Thousands raised for Scots football club after vandals torch clubhouse during lockdown

Thousands of pounds have been raised to help save a Scots football club after vandals set it ablaze during lockdown.

Firefighters raced to Bellshill Athletic FC's clubhouse at Rockburn Park on Sunday morning after neighbours were awoken by the smell of smoke.

The dressing rooms, entrance turnstiles, stores area and catering kiosk at Carnoustie Place were ripped apart by the 'deliberate' attack.

Club Secretary Brian Closs said they were 'beyond gutted' by what happend.

He told The Daily Record: "It's devastating and not what any of us need right now. Things are already hard without having to deal with this too. We're gutted."

The fire does not appear to have been a targeted attack, however Brian believe its was started 'deliberately'.

He added: "I don't think it's been a single attack on us right enough because I was told by officers there was several fires in the area overnight.

"They told me  lockdown  is going into meltdown.

"People are obviously getting bored but this is not the answer."

A fundraising page has now been set up by fans to help restore the building to its former glory.

More than £5000 has been raised in less than 24 hours.

Organiser David Brown wrote: "Bellshill Athletic FC are a community-based football club with a long history of over 100 years competing at Junior level.

"They have recently taken the decision to move into the Senior ranks of Scottish Football.

"In the early hours of April 12, their home ground, Rockburn Park, was attacked by vandals and arsonists, with the early signs looking like the dressing rooms, entrance turnstiles, stores area and catering kiosk being totally destroyed.

"As a supporter of the club, I am appealing to the people of Bellshill and the wider footballing community to assist financially with the clean up of the facility and to somehow get Rockburn Park into a safe condition for when football recommences after lockdown.

A police Scotland spokesperson said: "We supported the fire service at this location yesterday morning, around 6.40am. The fire is not being treated as suspicious."
