Thousands raised for homeless students forced to flee following devastating fire at The Cube

Thousands of pounds has been raised for homeless students forced to leave their flats following the devastating fire at The Cube tower block in Bolton.

Those affected by Friday night’s blaze were forced to flee from their accommodation with nothing.

Many say they have lost precious possessions in the fire, which is being investigated by fire chiefs after it spread "extremely rapidly" to the upper floors of the building.

It is not yet known when the students will be able to get back into their homes.

A donation page, set up to raise money for the affected students has already raised more than £7,000.

The official Just Giving page is being managed by Forever Manchester as part of the Greater Manchester Disaster Relief Fund.

A blurb on the fundraising page reads: “Of the 221 rooms 220 were occupied by students with 213 being students studying at the University of Bolton.

“These students are home and international students and had to leave immediately in what they were stood in, they have left with no personal possessions and there is no prospect of returning to this accommodation given the severity of the fire.

“The Greater Manchester Disaster Relief Fund is now accepting donations to support those affected. All donations to the Bolton Student Flats Fire Appeal will be gratefully received and passed on to those students who are in need.”

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene, on Bradshawgate, for the next few days.

Four fire engines and two aerial platforms are still at the scene.

Experts are assessing the safety of the building and an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the fire and the effect cladding had on how it spread.

Everyone registered to the building was accounted for on Saturday afternoon.

The university has short, medium and long-term plans in place to support and accommodate students.

Catering provisions and accommodation is in place for all evacuated students.

Any students who need information about the support available can call 01204 903733.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We’re pleased to say that contact has been made with the 220 residents that were registered to the building.

“Once again I want to thank all our partners for their continued support and in particular the firefighters who responded swiftly and immediately evacuated the building and rescued two people.

“Understandably people in high-rise buildings will be worried about the safety so we have advice on our website for Greater Manchester residents living in high-rise buildings.

“Our advice is to find out the evacuation strategy for their building, which should be clearly displayed in the building – if it isn’t then you should contact your landlord or managing agent.”
