Thousands raised for ‘hero’ who intervened in Belfast stabbing attack

  • Maitiu Mag Tighearnan has been hailed as a hero for intervening in a knife attack in north Belfast on Monday night.
  • Mr Tighearnan used a hurling stick to fight off an attacker who was seriously injuring a victim on Kinnaird Avenue.
  • A 30-year-old asylum seeker from Sudan has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident and is due to appear in court.
  • Over £18,000 has been raised via a GoFundMe page to support Mr Tighearnan, with his actions praised by his partner and Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn.
  • The stabbing incident subsequently led to large protests and unrest in Belfast, including homes and cars being set alight.
