Thousands raised for fiancée of drowned Irish dad-of-three as friend makes plea to public

Over €16,000 has been raised to help bring an Irish father-of-three home after he drowned while on holiday earlier this month.

Sean McAleenan, from north Belfast, was discovered in the pool in the Costa Dorado on August 9.

He had gone for a swim and was seen swimming lengths in the pool.

Emergency responders raced to the holiday apartment block in La Pineda near the east coast city of Tarragona after the alarm was raised around 11am.

They tried to revive him on arrival at the scene but could do nothing to save him and he was pronounced dead before his body was removed for a post-mortem examination.

His fiancée Maeve is still in the region, and now friends have launched a fundraiser to bring Sean's body home.

A GoFundMe reads: "Séan leaves behind his beautiful fiancee Maeve and her three adoring children.

"The funeral date has yet to be arranged but will be added to this page when Séan has been returned home and the necessary arrangements can finally be made.

"Please lend me your support at this devastating time for the family. Any donations made will be forwarded to Maeves brother in law Séan Fitzpatrick who is managing her affairs whilst she continues to fight for Séan in Spain."

Already, over €16,000 has been raised to repatriate Seán.
