Thousands raised for baker left without home or business in devastating fire

A popular cake maker has received an outpouring of support after a fire at her home 'destroyed everything' yesterday.

Laura Worthington, owner of Laura's Little Bakery, posted to her followers and customers on social media after a 'terrifying morning' at the property in Sandown Lane, Wavertree.

Laura runs her business from her home, which was gutted by the blaze in the early hours of Monday.

However a crowdfunding page has now raised more than £6,000 in less than 24 hours towards a recovery fund for her family.

The Justgiving page, set up by a user called Liz, states: "At 7am on 24th May Laura (Laura's Little Bakery, Global Scouse Day, Donate A Cake Laura) woke up to find her house on fire.

"Luckily nobody is seriously hurt but they've lost their business and their home. Laura has lost everything she's worked so hard to build. Her stock. Her equipment. Her furniture. Everything. And no, she isn't insured.

"Laura and Tom are constantly fund raising, thinking of ways to help people and giving. So it's our turn to help them now. Please help."

More than 260 people have offered donations, leaving messages of support and solidarity.

JF Plastering Solutions said: "You always make us the best cakes. We are devastated to hear what has happened and thinking of you all. Liverpool loves you."

Neil Fitzmaurice added: "You’ve given the love now it’s time you got some".

Posting on her business's Twitter and Instagram pages this morning, Laura said: "I’m missing messages because I’ve literally received thousands everywhere! It takes a village as they say.

"You have made waking up today a lot less stressful! All we can continue to say is THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!"

Yesterday Laura announced the incident in a moving social media post.

She said: "This morning I woke up to find the house on fire and thick smoke everywhere.... to cut a long story [short] after a terrifying morning we are without a home, without a business (everything’s been destroyed).

"I’m not sure what we have left in terms of possessions and Tom and Phoebe are in hospital but are fine and hopefully back later today!

"We were so so lucky and had it not been for Phoebe’s alarm waking me up god knows what would have happened but my brain hurts with what we do from here!

"I feel unbelievable lucky that we’re alive and safe but I have no idea what we do now!

"I'll be reaching out to everyone who has an order booked in with me, that process has begun but I will do my very best to help you find another cake maker and all refunds will be processed as quickly as I can do it! Devastated!"

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 7.04am and two fire engines were on the scene within seven minutes.

A spokeswoman said: "On arrival crews found a fire in the kitchen of the property. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters rescued two cats from the property. Both were unharmed and handed into the care of their owners.

"Two people were assessed at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

"It is believed the fire started accidentally. Fire crews left the scene at 8.51am."
